Down to earth good home cookin!
I have never failed to turn a head, except for one child, when I made her Applesauce Spice Cake. If you like camping and no nonsense cooking that tastes great, this is your book. Her personal stories are wonderful to read too! I received her book when I was married in 1974, and have never parted with it since.

Fool's Cascade
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (April, 1995)
Authors: Eugene L. Gitin and J. P. Hendricks

Wow - It's like an older Tom Clansy (the stuff he wrote)
The first thing that came to mind my mind was Tom Clancy.
No high tech stuff - more political stuff.
I could not put it down!

If you can get a copy - do it !

Homeward Heart (Pacific Cascades University Series, 2)
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (July, 1996)
Author: Lissa Halls Johnson
Average review score:

Good book that you can easily relate to
This was a great book. It was unlike most books in a series like that because of the fact that it was realistic. Most authors make things up so the book has a good plot but they are very fictional. This book has the realistic everyday temptations of an average college student along with realistic answers from an average college student. This is a book I defininetly recommend.

Mountain Bike Adventures in Washington's South Cascades and Puget Sound (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (July, 1996)
Author: Tom Kirkendall
Average review score:

A must-have for the adventurous offroad enthusiast
This book covers many of the great rides that most of the population areas of the state can ride. We have particularly enjoyed the level of detail of the routes off of highway 410. The author's superlative explanations were so enticing that we ventured the 100 miles from our home to test them out--ever point was justified. We have been back 3 times in the last month to try them again. Without a book like this, you just have to take your chances...with the odds not always in your favor.

Each documented route has great directions on how to get there and how to get through the route and back out with meticulous attention to the key scenic points, the level-setting of the difficulty, and the waypoints (in 10ths of miles).

On our last ride, we were discussing the ride up Bald Mountain with strangers who were also carrying the same book with them on their bikes. We're not the only advocates.

All-in-all, Kirkendall's book is a great motivator to get out and enjoy the splendor of this state on two wheels.

You can't be disappointed by this book.

Selected Climbs in the Cascades: Alpine Routes, Sport Climbs, & Crag Climbs
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Jim Nelson and Peter Potterfield
Average review score:

Could not be a better guidebook.
This is one of the most well done guidebooks I have ever seen. Some of my friends refer to the first volume of this book as "The Bible of Northwest Climbing." This one is destined for the same accolades.

The book itself is made of heavy stock paper - something that you can throw around in your car and not worry about too much. The black and white pictures are awesome and the route descriptions are well written. Hardware suggestions appear to be appropriate and the permit information looks good too.

This book describes 96 new routes and includes crag climbs (something which was not covered in the first edition). Perhaps the best thing about this book is that most of the climbs are somewhat off of the beaten track and not the most well known. Every self-respecting climber in the northwest should own both of these books - they're guaranteed to get you excited and help you pick your next trip.
